An
automotive magazine was never
the original plan for
Autoguide Publications, Inc
owner and editor, Illene
Moriarty. She was known for
her artistic and creative
talents among her family and
friends who encouraged these
abilities within her.
Born and
raised in Beacon, New York,
Illene and her family spent
most of their afternoons on
the ski mountain due to her
father’s position as the
ski team’s coach. For
vacations, the beach was the
summer hot spot. This
incredible array of
environments helped inspire
Illene’s original
passion of photography, which
she decided to attend school
for.
While
attending Sullivan College,
Illene found a new arena in
which to express her
creativity: food. She made the
choice to transfer to the
hotel and restaurant
management program in order to
learn the necessary background
she would need to start her
own business emphasizing her
passion for food. After
finishing school, one of
Illene’s most memorable
jobs was as a cook for the
Syler Food Cooperation that
allowed her to work on a
Merchant Marine ship traveling
the Mediterranean.
Once back
in the United States, Illene
applied the skills and talents
she learned in college to a
catering business. Over time,
she also worked in different
restaurants and was the
manager of a well-known
bakery. This passion for
food has never diminished even
after taking on the family
business at Autoguide
Publications.
In 2001,
Illene took her creative
talents to yet another area of
art: jewelry. She learned
metal smithing at the 92nd
street Y in Manhattan where
she continues classes today.
She has developed a signature
to her stone and metal work
which many of her customers
have never found within
another designer.
Illene
currently spends her time
between the NYCs’ Upper
West Side and Milton, NY with
her husband Patrick, who she
married in 1987, and her two
corgi’s, Sophie and
Rocco. She is always
hands on with the current
projects developing under the
Autoguide Publications, Inc.
umbrella.
